Santa Monica Boulevard Lamppost Hangings
Before the current 405 project, Westsiders were taunted by the Santa Monica Boulevard Transit Parkway project. It cost over $90 million and took four years to complete. Most of the changes, however, did make the drive through Century City more pleasant including the addition of these lamppost hangings. These decorations, otherwise known as part of the Santa Monica Boulevard Streetscape, were under the supervision of Los Angeles installation artist, Barbara McCarren.
Because Santa Monica Boulevard is the beginning (or end) of the 2,451 mile Route 66, these hangings commemorate the 8 states along the way in only 2.5 miles.
